چکیده

In this opinion article, we present the Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO). The goal of TAHMO is to develop a dense network of hydro-meteorological measurement stations throughout sub-Saharan Africa. On average, there will be one station per 1000 km2. The stations will be cost-effective through the use of new sensor and communication technologies. The station design is robust and aims atminimizingmaintenance. Special attentionwill be paid to data quality assessment and control. Through public–private partnerships, the system will be made financially self-sustaining. Education will play an important role as many stations will be placed at schools, where they will play a role in the curriculum. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Information Entropy Suggests Stronger Nonlinear Associations between Hydro-Meteorological Variables and ENSO

Understanding the teleconnections between hydro-meteorological data and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation cycle (ENSO) is an important step towards developing flood early warning systems. In this study, the concept of mutual information (MI) was applied using marginal and joint information entropy to quantify the linear and non-linear relationship between annual streamflow, extreme precipitation...

Towards a Grid Infrastructure for hydro-Meteorological Research

The Distributed Research Infrastructure for Hydro-Meteorological Study (DRIHMS) is a coordinated action co-funded by the European Commission. DRIHMS analyzes the main issues that arise when designing and setting up a pan-European Grid-based e-Infrastructure for research activities in the hydrologic and meteorological fields. The main outcome of the project is represented first by a set of Grid ...

Drought is a climatic anomaly that associates with a significant decrease (lack) of precipitation and water resources availability, which spreads on vast temporal and spatial scales, and significantly affects various aspects of life and environment. One of the most common methods of drought assessing and monitoring is calculating drought indices (DIs). Drought areal and temporal extent and its ...

Differential mortality patterns from hydro-meteorological disasters: Evidence from cause-of-death data by age and sex

This paper evaluates the heterogeneous impact of hydro-meteorological disasters on populations along the dimensions of age, sex, and human development. The analysis is based on previously untapped cause-of-death data over the period 1995– 2011 that were obtained from the WHO mortality database, and were based on the civil registration records of 63 countries/territories. Using these data, we ev...
